Organized in 1923, Greenwood Volunteer Fire Co., No. 1, Inc. started with a 1924 Ford Model T. At that time, the uneducated belief was that all fire apparatus should be red in color. Greenwood served its community well with its red apparatus until the age of enlightenment. This is the time, just before 1971, that Robert Collins suggested painting the soon to be purchased 1971 Great Eastern Pumper green.
After careful consideration, the body of the Greenwood Vol. Fire Co. voted to have their new piece painted green. Of course, a fire company cannot run just one green apparatus, so the trucks already in possession were painted green as well, with the exception of the model T. And so it goes.
Ever since 1971 Greenwood and surrounding communities have been served with pride by men and women on green fire trucks. The burning question is: when will everyone else realize that fire trucks are supposed to be green? Who ever heard of a red fire truck anyway? So on days past, and forever more, we, the proud members of Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company, will raise the doors and serve our community with pride with our B. G. T.'s.
