The Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company (GVFC) was initially organized to provide fire protection to our community. During this time, the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Company(BVFC) was responsible for providing our community with an ambulance service.
In 1980, several members of our company enrolled in the Ambulance Attendant Certification course that was provided by the Delaware State Fire School. After refurbishing an old Dodge Rescue Truck, our members began to run medical assists with BVFC on all emergency medical calls within Greenwood. Our first ambulance was purchased and put into service in 1981. At the time, there were approxiamately twenty certified ambulance attendants providing emergency medical services to the community. Mr. Donald Donovan, Sr. was the first Ambulance Captain and held this position for several years.
Presently, the GVFC has 5 full-time employees and approximately 15 part-time employees that protect the community 24/7. The personnel are comprised of Emergency Medical Responders, Driver-Only, as well as Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technicians.
